This is a guide to non-commercial, unofficial Star Wars derivative works, fan edits, and film preservation projects. These projects are distributed for free by the community. In terms of community-supported distribution methods, BitTorrent infohashes are provided here, or if BitTorrent isn't your thing, thestarwarstrilogy.com offers some info on Usenet and has a forum with further info. After the files are obtained, they can be burned to discs or added to media server libraries (Jellyfin, Plex, etc.) and played from compatible client devices.

The goal of Project 4K77 is simply to create a version of the 1977 Pre-Special Edition version of Star Wars that will look good on a 4K television or monitor.

Scanned, cleaned and rendered at 4K, the material is sourced primarily from two original 35mm Technicolor prints, with additional material taken from the 35mm Spanish LPP, a 4K scan of a 1997 Special Edition print, some Eastman reels, and just a handful of frames from the Official Blu-ray when missing frames could not be sourced from anywhere else.

Release notes

Born out of frustrated fans' failed attempts to convince George Lucas to release the unaltered theatrical versions of the Star Wars Original Trilogy films (Episodes IV, V, & VI), the online forum community built around a popular petition hosted at OriginalTrilogy.com turned to discussion of fan edits as a means to obtain their shared goal without Lucas' help. Eventually, a fan restoration project led by Harmy as the primary video editor resulted in the Despecialized Edition (abbreviated as "DEED" or "DE").

Since the initial release of the Despecialized Edition of Star Wars ("Episode IV: A New Hope") in 2011, Harmy has since published DEED versions of The Empire Strike Back (Episode V, "ESB") and Return of the Jedi (Episode VI, "ROTJ"), and continues to release landmark updates to each of these restored films.

As of March 2024, the Despecialized Edition of Star Wars was remastered then recolorized at version 2.7, ESB stands at v2.0 with additional improvements in development, and ROTJ v3.1 implements highly superior source materials allowing for a 4K UltraHD release. If you plan to enjoy Star Wars DEED to the fullest, check for the most current versions, and learn how to stay informed so that you'll know of future updates when they're available!

Each of the DEED films includes a combination of three projects: video, audio, and subtitles.

The video itself was painstakingly restored from various sources, including the official Blu-rays, film scans, bonus DVDs, Digital TV broadcasts, and more. All these were gathered from fans around the world, then compiled and underwent massive fine-tuning by Harmy and others.

The audio features availability in numerous streams. From 5.1 DTS-HD-MA surround, to 1.0 mono mix to reproduce the feel of the original theatrical showing, to various dubs in a multitude of languages, the sound choices bundled with Harmy's DEED allows the films' sound to accommodate any preference. Most audio work was contributed by hairy_hen and Belbucus.

Finally, Harmy's DEED also includes and supports subtitles courtesy of Project Threepio led by CatBus. This ongoing fan project provides high-quality subtitles for Star Wars films in their unaltered forms in order to broaden the appeal of fan preservation efforts beyond the English-speaking world.

Many view Harmy's Star Wars Trilogy Despecialized Edition as the quintessential version of the Original Trilogy and a testament to the unwavering dedication of fans inspired by the films. Harmy's Despecialised Editions are great for those that want to see the films exactly as they were when they were originally released theatrically, but some of the changes (especially the updating of special effects) actually make the films better IMHO, so I decided to make "Semi-Specialised" editions of these films to remove what I considered the bad changes while keeping all the good changes/additions.

Audio:

New lossless PCM audio track created to fit this Semi-Specialised edition, based on Belbucus's 1993 PCM audio mix

Two DTS-HD MA audio tracks are included: a DTS-HD MA 5.1 upmix of Belbucus's 1995 PCM audio mix, and a Cinema DTS-HD MA 5.1 track created for this Semi-Specialised Edition. It is unclear which is which.

Original Krayt Dragon call restored (heard when Obi-Wan rescues Luke from the Tusken Raiders)

Video:

Regraded to remove blue tint running throughout the whole film that was introduced for the first time in the special edition DVD and was carried over to the Blu-ray

R2D2 no longer hiding behind a CG rock when Obi-Wan Kenobi appears

Silly CG droid and jawa antics when they enter Mos Eisley removed

Jabba scene removed (the "Han mabuki" scene)

Han shoots Greedo first with no awful CG head dodging action

Han chases stormtroopers on the Death Star into a dead end like the theatrical cut, instead of into a docking bay like the Special Edition

Lightsabers made more consistent so they are not constantly changing colour (Vader's lightsaber is now red all the time rather than turning pink, Luke's lightsaber while he is training with Obi-Wan on the Millennium Falcon is now blue)

Subtitles:

SRT subtitles are included.

Forced subtitles for Greedo's dialogue are not burned in. An external SRT file is included for forced subtitles.

v2.5:

I have made two changes to V2.5 compared to previous releases, I have replaced two specialised shots that I have always found distracting when watching previous versions of the Star Wars Semi-Specialised Edition.

The first shot is where the CG dino creature walks across the frame covering the whole screen as Luke and Ben are being stopped by Stormtroopers in Mos Eisley.

The second shot is a very silly over the top scene where Han is chasing the stormtroopers in the Death Star and in the Special Edition he comes round the corner and there are hundreds of CG stormtroopers in a docking bay waiting for him, while in the theatrical release it was just a dead end with the six stormtroopers he'd been chasing waiting for him, a very funny scene in the theatrical release that just looks very silly and fake in the Special Edition.

I used TeamNegative1's Silver Screen Screen Edition as my video source to reinsert these two scenes into this V2.5 (thank you so much TeamNegative1 for creating this wonderful release and sharing it with everybody). I also adjusted the colour grading of the two replaced shots to make them more seamlessly match the colour grading of the rest of V2.5 and also removed the more distracting spots and dirt that appeared here and there.

Also included in this release is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 upmix upmix of Belbucus's fantastic Star Wars '95 PCM two channel audio track and the Cinema DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track created to fit this Semi-Specialised Edition. The video bitrate has also been boosted compared to previous versions to better fit the 23GB space available on a writable bd-25 disc. All edits/changes have been kept exactly the same as the previous releases. Enjoy!

v3.0

With this V3 release I have used the newest Star Wars Blu-ray as my main video source because it has far more natural looking colours than the previous bluray that has very oversaturated colours, has a strong blue tint throughout the film and the fleshtones have a very strong reddish magenta push that makes characters look permanently sunburnt.

Another change with this V3 release compared to V2.5 is that Luke's lightsaber while he is training with Obi-Wan on the Millennium Falcon is now blue as it was in the original theatrical release of Star Wars.

I have also reduced of the brightness of the garbage compactor scene because I felt that it was a little bright on the newest Star wars bluray and the added brightness IMHO robbed the scene of some of its atmosphere and menace.

Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Scanned, cleaned and rendered at 4K, the material is sourced primarily from one original 1980 35mm print (actually a mix of Fuji and Eastman reels), Reel 1 is from a UK Print, with additional material taken from a 4K scan of a 1997 Special Edition print, for those few occasions when missing frames could not be sourced from anywhere else.

Versions of the project include 1080p and 4K renders without digital noise reduction. These are titled as follows:

I believe there is 1 extra frame in 4K80, also found on the PAL DVD, but 1 frame shouldn't present any noticeable sync issues, particularly, with dubbed sound or subtitles.

Plans for potential future updates:

A Blu-ray ISO has been discussed for a more standard movie-watching experience which will include a disc menu, alongside additional content and bonus features.

Since the dynamic range of the scanned film exceeds that of standard televisions, there is potential for a future HDR release. The team is working hard to produce an HDR version as our understanding of the encoding requirements evolve - stay tuned.

All extra shots of Darth Vader going back to the Executor and the arrival on the star destroyer that were not in the theatrical release have been removed so they do not interrupt the escape of the Millennium Falcon

Lightsabers are more consistent so they are not constantly changing colour (Vader's lightsaber is now red all the time rather than turning pink)

v3.0

For this latest V3 release of The Empire Strikes Back Semi-Specialised Edition I decided to use the most recent 2020 blu-ray release of The Empire Strikes Back as my main source because I feel that it has far more natural colours than the previous blu-ray and all the Vader lightsaber colour inconsistencies have been corrected.

Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi (1983)

The goal of Project 4K83 is simply to create a version of the 1983 Pre-Special Edition version of Return of the Jedi that will look good on a 4K television or monitor.

This project is being rendered at 1080p and 4k UHD (2160p).

99.9% of all frames used in this project are sourced from one original 1983 35mm Eastman print. The remaining 175 frames were sourced from an alternate 35mm print. All frames were scanned, cleaned, stabilized, and color corrected in 4k (anamorphic) from 35mm prints. The primary print used is NOT a release print but a special screening print struck directly from the original film negative in 1983. It is presented with its original film grain intact which is two generations less than what a theatrical release print would have and only one generation from the original negative.

No digital noise reduction (DNR) or sharpening has been applied to the film image.

Color Timing: The color correction has been done on a reel-to-reel basis (mostly). This preserves the color variations from shot to shot as they would have been seen in theatres in 1983. A few deviations from the reel-to-reel correction have been made to better conform to a TV/monitor environment, plus other minor adjustments. For the most part it is a reel-to-reel color correction.

This project is not GOUT-synced. The GOUT version of this film is missing two frames that were seen in theatres. This project presents those two original theatrical frames for film and historical accuracy. Muxing in alternate GOUT synced audio to this project will slightly alter the audio sync by two frames. Most people won't notice a two frame shift in audio sync. The two extra frames are located at time 00:47:41.

Audio Track 1 is the stereo optical audio extracted from our primary 35mm print using a 35mm optical reader and Dolby decoder. Mastering by schorman.

Audio Track 2 is a new 5.1 audio track, mastered for this release. Mastering by hairy_hen. This 5.1 mix is only suited for 5.1 systems. For 2.0 systems use one of the stereo tracks for greater clarity.

Audio Track 3 is the 1993 LaserDisc stereo audio. Mastering by schorman.

Audio Track 4 is the 1993 LaserDisc audio commentary. Mastering by schorman.

Some alternate audio is provided in an Alternate Audio folder for you to mux in as desired. All audio provided is synced to 4K83. Thank you hairy_hen and schorman.

v1.3 minimal NR

This is my minimal NR (Noise Reduction) version. The print capture that we used had some chroma noise added by the camera used to capture it. This version attempts to remove the chroma noise but preserve as much of the original grain and detail as possible. A 15% Temporal NR was applied in Neat Video. Doing any kind of NR softens the grain and image. I applied some sharpening in Neat Video to sharpen the detail but not the grain. It should be a bit sharper than v1.0 or v1.1.

The colour for the most part is sanjuro_61's grade (v1.1). I made a few tweaks throughout. I also applied a contrast curve to brighten it up a bit. I retained the existing black levels though.

I removed the reel change markers. I felt they were important to preserve for my previous releases but now we can move on to a cleaner look.

The 5.1 track is swapped with the more authentic version that was in the alternate audio folder previously.

Release notes

This is a reconstruction of the 1983 theatrical version of Return of the Jedi. The main source is the 2019 UHD Blu-ray, and the original shots were restored using the amazing 4K83 fan-preservation, which is a scan of a 35mm film made by Team Negative 1. Thanks so much for this awesome release, Team Negative 1! Sometimes entire shots or even sequences were used from 4K83, extensively cleaned and enhanced to match the look of the UHD Blu-ray. In other places, like for example the Ewok eyes or Vader's eyebrows, only small portions of the shots were replaced. All original shots were restored, including recomposited vfx and other "fixes" made for the Special Edition.

For v3.1, minor fixes were made, the biggest of which include adding a Jabba subtitle, which was missing in 3.0, and replacing the 5.1 English audio track, where in v3.0 a custom track with additional music in the Obi-Wan ghost scene was used by mistake.

For v3.1, the UHD encode has been done by a professional studio, so the compression quality is better and the stream is now compatible for remuxing and burning a UHD Blu-ray disc. Big thanks to Poita, hairy_hen, schorman, Mavimao and CatBus!

All subtitles are from "Project Threepio v15.0"

The over the top carbon defreezing effects added to the Blu-ray have been removed and replaced with the original defreezing effects from the theatrical release

The CG dug added to the Blu-ray release that walks down the steps of Jabba's palace just before Luke arrives has been removed and replaced with the original shot without the CG dug

When R2D2 gets shot, all the CGI appendages added for the Blu-ray release have been removed

Victory Celebration has been replaced with the original theatrical ending, Yub Nub.

All the CG celebration scenes on the other planets have been removed with the exception of the first, cloud city. Jar Jar Binks and his "Weesa Free!" is gone, thankfully.

Hayden Christensen and his creepy glare has been removed from the final scene with the Jedi spirits and replaced with the original actor from the theatrical release, Sebastian Shaw

Forced subtitles for Jabba's dialogue are not burned in. An external SRT file is included for forced subtitles.

v3.0

With the V3 release I have used the newest Return of the Jedi Blu-ray as my main video source because it has far more natural looking colours than the previous Blu-ray that has very oversaturated colours, has a strong blue tint throughout the film and the fleshtones have a very strong reddish magenta push that makes characters look permanently sunburnt.

I have also reduced of the brightness of the new Blu-ray because I felt the film was a little too bright overall, negatively affecting the atmosphere of what should be darker scenes on the Death Star in the third act, particularly the fight between Luke and Darth Vader.

I used Star.Wars.Episode.VI.Return.of.the.Jedi.1983.2160p.CUSTOM.DCPRIP.SDR.x265.DTS-HD.MA.5.1-4k83v1.2.2 as my video source to reinsert Lapti Nek and Yub Nub into this V3 release (my thanks to everybody that was involved in putting together this very nice 2160p theatrical reconstruction of Return of the Jedi and sharing it with everybody). I also reduced the colour saturation of the Yub Nub footage to make it more seamlessly match the colour grading of the rest of the Return of the Jedi V3 Semi-Specialised Edition.

Also included in this release is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 upmix upmix of Belbucus's fantastic Return of the Jedi '95 PCM two channel audio track and the Cinema DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track created to fit this Semi-Specialised Edition.

Thank you CapableMetal for syncing the Cinema DTS 5.1 tracks split by reels to the '97 release and then providing me with them, I couldn't have created these Cinema DTS MA 5.1 tracks without them! Chapter timings from the blu ray have also been included in this release.

v4.0

With this V4 release I have removed all the CG additions that I removed from all of my Return of the Jedi Semi-Specialised Editions prior to V3 but I forgot to implement them in V3. Thank you everybody that got in touch with me about these annoying CG additions still being included in V3. You keep me on my toes :) I also tweaked the audio a little to improve the overall audio syncing and increased the colour saturation of the whole film slightly compared to V3. The CG tentacles and mouth in the Sarlacc Pit sequence remain because i've always felt that they improved the scene compared to the theatrical release, adding menace to the Sarlacc Pit and making it more proactively involved in the fight. The theatrical version seems very static and uninvolved in the fight by comparison IMHO.

The following Special Edition CG additions have been reverted back to how they were in the theatrical release for this V4 release:

The huge CG door leading into Jabba's palace that was added for the Blu-ray release has been replaced with the original door from the theatrical release

The over the top carbon defreezing effects added to the Blu-ray have been removed and replaced with the original defreezing effects from the theatrical release

The CG dug added to the Blu-ray release that walks down the steps of Jabba's palace just before Luke arrives has been removed and replaced with the original shot without the CG dug

Synopsis: It's the same Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens you fell in love with, only restructured slightly so that Starkiller Base does not fire until close to the end of the film. During the battle over Starkiller Base, the stakes are no longer protecting the Resistance base, but preventing the destruction of the Republic Capitol. Even though they destroy the First Order's superweapon, they fail to do so in time to save the day.

Intention: To move the destruction of the Hosnian system to the climax of the film, and and implement all the little things necessary to facilitate it seamlessly.

How does this restructuring help the film?

The second act centers around the events of Maz's castle and remains focused on the characters and their struggle to keep the First Order from finding the map to Luke. The First Order catching up to Han and Rey is sufficient motivation for Finn to decide not to leave, without the Hosnian system being destroyed.

Starkiller Base firing upon the Hosnian system in the third act links it very closely to Kylo Ren's resolution toward the dark side as he kills Han. Pairing these events magnifies each.

Han taking a risk motivated by love for his son which brings about costly failure is a dark mirror of Vader doing the same in Return of the Jedi and ending up helping to save the galaxy.

It alleviates the plot's very close parallel with the original Star Wars.

Starkiller Base is depicted as functioning in an intuitive way: it drains the nearby star (or "the Sun," as Finn describes it), which covers it in darkness, and then fires on the Republic Capitol. Gone are the awkward questions about why the planet was still in daylight when it fired the first time during the second act, and whether the base is mobile.

It avoids depicting the Hosnian system clearly visible to the naked eye, very large in the sky, from lightyears away. The official Lucasfilm canon answer is that Starkiller Base created a "space-time disruption," an obvious bandaid answer to apologize for a wanton move on the filmmakers' part. One wonders whether such intersystem spectacles are common in this world, because no one who witnessed the destruction had the slightest trouble identifying what was happening.

It avoids raising the question of why the Resistance did not begin evacuating their base during the third act when they know they are the target. In the original Star Wars, the Death Star was looming overhead; here, there's no obvious reason why they could not have fled.

This project was born of the emergent idea from all over the Internet after we all saw the film. Numerous people at OriginalTrilogy.com suggested this idea immediately after release.
